Sample flashcard
A switch port is not up/up and is not err-disabled or administratively down (it shows notconnect). Where should you look first?
At the physical layer: the cable, the optic or a speed mismatch. Check the pinout, cable type and Rx power.
Sample practice question
A user on the third floor complains that file copies to a server crawl in the afternoon. The access port is up/up, both ends report a-full and a-1000, and after clearing the counters an hour ago the port now shows 2,914 CRC errors, 0 collisions, 0 late collisions and 0 output drops. The horizontal run passes the motor room of a freight elevator. What is the most likely cause?
- A. Noise or damage on the copper run corrupting frames
- B. A duplex mismatch between the switch and the NIC
- C. Egress congestion on the switch port toward the user
- D. A speed mismatch that forces the link to retrain
Answer: A. CRC errors with no collisions of any kind on a negotiated full-duplex gigabit link point at the physical medium: interference from the elevator motor, a damaged pair or poor terminations. A duplex mismatch would leave late collisions on the half-duplex side, and both ends here negotiated full. A speed mismatch keeps the link down rather than up with errors. Congestion shows as output drops, which are zero.
