Sample flashcard
Campus design: how many distribution pairs can you have before Cisco says you need a dedicated core layer?
Two. With more than two distribution pairs, build a three-tier design with a core.
Sample practice question
Which overall campus design should the architect plan for the expanded Northwind headquarters?
- A. Keep a collapsed core and connect the new pairs to Building 1's pair
- B. Stretch one Layer 2 domain across all buildings and run MST
- C. Add a dedicated core pair that every distribution pair uplinks to
- D. Full-mesh fiber between all four distribution pairs, with no core
Answer: C. With four distribution pairs the campus is past the point (more than two pairs) where Cisco recommends a dedicated core, so each block uplinks only to the core. Hanging new blocks off one building's collapsed core makes that pair a bottleneck and a shared failure domain. A full mesh needs six inter-block links today and grows quadratically with every new block. A campus-wide Layer 2 domain throws away the fault containment the hierarchy is meant to provide.
