Sample flashcard
When choosing a service provider core architecture, what decides each choice: one MPLS domain or Unified MPLS, LDP/RSVP-TE or Segment Routing, SR-MPLS or SRv6?
Network size decides one domain or Unified MPLS. Wanting to drop LDP and RSVP-TE and let the IGP carry the labels decides Segment Routing. Labels or native IPv6 in the data plane decides SR-MPLS or SRv6; SR-TE policies are added only for services that need a non-shortest path.
Sample practice question
A regional provider is growing to 3,000 cell-site and aggregation routers spread over nine regions. Engineering wants each region to keep its own small IS-IS instance with LDP, without redistributing PE loopbacks between regions, while L3VPN and L2VPN services still need one end-to-end LSP between any two PEs. Which core architecture meets these requirements?
- A. SRv6 with micro-SIDs, replacing LDP in every region
- B. A full mesh of RSVP-TE tunnels signalled between every pair of PEs in all regions
- C. One IS-IS level 2 domain with LDP on every router in all nine regions
- D. Unified MPLS, with BGP labeled unicast carrying PE loopbacks between regions
Answer: D. Unified MPLS keeps every region a separate IGP and LDP domain and uses BGP labeled unicast to advertise PE loopbacks with labels between them, so an end-to-end LSP exists without leaking loopbacks into each IGP. Merging all routers into one IS-IS domain is exactly the scaling problem the design must avoid. SRv6 would remove LDP, which the requirement keeps. A full mesh of RSVP-TE tunnels among thousands of PEs puts per-tunnel state on every midpoint and does not separate the regions at all.
